Introduction

The team-effectiveness canvas deals with the team dynamics that are important for team effectiveness. It is inspired by theteamcanvas and principles and practices of organisational and systems team coaching (ORSC).

The team-effectiveness-canvas

  • is emphasising the correlation between the quality of relationship of the team members and the team effectiveness.
  • Additionally it promotes a mindset that sees the team as a whole. This is useful to overcome edgy situations in teams and create alignment faster.

Who is it for?

The team-effectiveness canvas can be used in general from people that want to build effective teams. That could be for example team-leads, scrum masters, community builders, team coaches, or agile coaches.

The importance of the relationship for effectiveness.

Effectiveness encompasses the team’s ability to prioritize and execute appropriate actions. While the “boss” or some other “expert” may have previously provided guidance on the correct course of action, in a complex and dynamic environment, relying solely on the one and only “expert” (or few experts) for problem-solving or decision-making may be limited. In a complex and rapidly changing world, it’s true that the “boss”expert” alone may not have all the answers or be able to make decisions on their own.

To ensure the team is effective and focused on doing the right things, a good approach would be to foster a culture of collaboration, empowerment, and continuous learning. That means that the ability of the team to be effective is strongly depending on the quality of the collaboration in the team. Knowing this, it is important for a team to consciously improve the relationship among its team members. The team-effectiveness canvas focuses on some important team dynamics aspects for great collaboration and effectiveness

Since creating a bond among team members is not a linear process, but rather teams iterate through different phases, the team-effectiveness canvas is something to re-use. Using the team-effectiveness canvas requires facilitation and it is also not a linear process. There is no suggested order or time frame for doing the exercises and asking the questions. I recommend to start with an experienced facilitator and then take over your continuous improvement as a team.
